The best time to buy Pokémon cards on eBay
When eBay auctions end cheapest, which hours and days have the least competition, how set releases and the calendar move prices, and how to turn timing into real discounts.
The same graded card can close for very different prices depending on when its auction ends. Competition, not the card, sets the final bid. This guide covers the hours, days and seasons where buyers have the edge.
Hour of the day
Most US bidders are online in the evening. An auction ending between 7 and 11 p.m. Eastern draws the most last-minute bids; one ending between 2 and 7 a.m. Eastern draws the fewest. Sellers who schedule poorly, or who are overseas and list on their own evening, create the quiet-hour endings where cards close under market. If you can be awake, or set an alert, those are the auctions to target.
Day of the week
Sunday evening is the busiest closing time on eBay by a wide margin: sellers know it is when bidders are home, so the most auctions end then and the most buyers are watching. That is good for sellers and mixed for buyers. There are many more cards to choose from, but prices on popular cards are firm. Weeknight endings, especially Monday through Wednesday, are quieter.
Time of year
- Set releases. When a new set launches, attention and money shift to it. Cards from the previous set often dip for a few weeks.
- Tax refund season in February and March tends to lift hobby spending in the US.
- Late summer is often slower, with fewer bidders.
- Holidays. Demand rises into December and so do prices; January is where many collectors sell to pay for it.
Market cycles
Graded Pokémon prices move in waves over months and years, driven by the wider collectibles market, grading backlogs and attention on social media. Buying a card you want during a quiet stretch beats buying it the week it appears in a viral post. The charts on our card price pages show each card against the overall Pokémon index, so it is easy to see whether a card's move is its own or the market's.
Turning timing into a discount
- Build a short list of cards and grades you want, with the recent sold median for each from the price pages.
- Watch for auctions on those cards that end at quiet hours. The deal finder sorts live auctions by closing time next to their comps.
- Bid your maximum once, late. See how last-second bidding works.
- For Buy It Nows, timing is seconds, not hours: set an alert in the app for the card and price and let it find you.
See it live: every graded card auction and Buy It Now in the deal finder is priced against its recent sold comps.

What time do eBay auctions end cheapest?
Auctions that end in the early morning US hours, roughly 2 to 7 a.m. Eastern, have the fewest bidders and the most under-market closes. Weeknights are quieter than weekends.
Is Sunday a good day to buy cards on eBay?
Sunday evening has the most auctions ending, so there is the widest choice, but also the most buyers. It is the best day to find a specific card and a weaker day to get a deep discount on a popular one.
Do Pokémon card prices drop after a new set comes out?
Cards from the previous set often soften for a few weeks as attention moves to the new release. It is a pattern, not a rule; chase cards with lasting demand are less affected.
